Snowboard season continues in Saas-Fee and Barcelona

On the Swiss glacier, it was Torah Jane Bright (AUS) and Kazuhiro Kokubo (JPN) who triumphed against the world elite of freestyle talents. In Barcelona, just days after his win at the season's first big air in London, Stefan Gimpl celebrated a back-to-back victory.

Great conditions await at Levi

The Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup continues with the slalom opening some 170 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Levi (FIN). According to Hans Pieren, FIS Race Director for the men's technical events, the conditions at Levi are outstanding. "The race course is deep frozen down to approximately 50cm in depth. The forecast for the weekend calls for around -10C which will be optimal."

European Cup kicks off with two speed events on Reiteralm

The FIS European Cup (EC) in Alpine Skiing kicked off Monday and Tuesday, 9th-10th November, on Reiteralm (AUT) with two men's super-G events. These races, representing the international speed season opening, saw almost 210 racers from 20 nations at the start.

10 years of WADA

The 10th November signified the tenth anniversary of the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In the past ten years, WADA has had a profound impact on the fight against doping in sport. WADA's activities in areas such as promotion, education, athlete outreach, scientific research, harmonization and independent monitoring have helped make global anti-doping efforts much more sophisticated.

Registration deadline for 1st Winter Masters Games extended until 25th December

More than 2'000 athletes from 42 countries have already registered to participate in the World Winter Masters Games in Bled (SLO) from 25th-31st January 2010. Because so many athletes still want to enter, the deadline for registration has been extended until 25th December 2009.

Skiing every day, six years in a row - now that's passion!

Saturday, 1st November, was the six-year anniversary for Rainer Hertrich of Copper Mountain (USA) to have skied every single day since that same day in 2003, a world record that will probably not be broken in the near future! By now, he has skied over 72 million vertical feet over the six year streak, which amounts to skiing around the world several times.

Introducing Members of FIS Athletes’ Commission: Matej Ligocki (POL)
Matej Ligocki

Matej Ligocki (POL) is the representative of the male Snowboarders on the FIS Athletes' Commission. He has so far scored five World Cup podiums including one victory. Lately, he has been recovering from an injury endured early last season. The 27-year-old comes from a snowboard crazy family in Cieszyn and is often seen riding with his brother and other relatives.

FIS Newsflash: Who is Mat Ligocki?

Mat: Mat Ligocki has always loved sport. All sport, from judo to tennis and alpine skiing, ping-pong, basketball, volleyball, soccer and gymnastics. He started snowboarding at the age of 15 and a short time later, already achieved internationally solid results. Currently he is one of most experienced snowboarders around (over 270 starts in FIS events alone)...

FIS Council to meet in Zürich

The FIS Council is holding its autumn meeting traditionally in Switzerland, this time at the Hotel Hilton Zurich Airport, the tried and tested excellent host of the FIS Autumn Meetings for eight years in a row.

The Council's agenda will include, among other things, review of the 2010 Congress proposals submitted by the National Ski Associations.

New Kandahar start gate building in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

According to the Organizing Committee for GAP 2011, the construction of the new start gate building on the men's Kandahar slope will be concluded shortly. The works at an altitude of 1700 meters started in August this year, and the interior finishing will be completed in two-three weeks.

Developing skiing in India: the challenge of homologation

FIS Homologation Inspector Walter Trilling recently visited India with the goal of evaluating the current state of the Alpine race courses in Manali and Gulmarg. Homologation of these courses is seen as an important step for further development and promotion of the two ski areas as well as for tourism in the entire region.

Fact of the Week 46

120 - number of countries out of the 193 UNESCO Member States that had ratified the International Convention against Doping in Sport by WADA's 10th birthday this week. The  percentage of the world population covered by the Convention amounts to 86%.
